Saudi share dividends: eligibility, payment dates and yield

Calendar and sealed envelope representing Saudi share dividends

Ali Almesfer · Reviewed 13 October 2026

To qualify for a declared Saudi share dividend, check the issuer's stated eligibility date and its shareholder-register condition. Announcements commonly require ownership at the end of trading on the eligibility date and registration with Edaa after settlement. The payment date comes later; buying only on that date does not qualify you.

Companies can distribute cash, issue bonus shares or retain profit for their business. A dividend is a decision tied to a specific issuer announcement, not an automatic payment for every listed share.

Use the issuer announcement as the final reference for conditions. The exchange's dividend calendar is a convenient starting point, while Edaa's Tadawulaty service can help a shareholder inspect entitlements.

Three dates on a Saudi dividend announcement

DateWhat it tells youInvestor action
Announcement dateWhen the issuer publishes its distribution decision or proposal.Read the amount, approval status and eligibility condition.
Eligibility dateThe date used to determine entitled shareholders under the announcement and register rules.Check the exact wording and your recorded holding.
Distribution dateWhen the issuer or its payment agent plans to pay entitled holders.Check your linked investment account after this date.

The Saudi Exchange dividend calendar provides these fields, together with the symbol, company, distribution method and dividend amount. Many issuer notices specify ownership at the end of the eligibility-day session and registration with Edaa by the end of the second following trading day. Read the exact issuer wording: some proposals still require shareholder approval or give a payment date later.

Example: if an announcement names Sunday as the eligibility date and uses the usual second-trading-day Edaa register condition, the register check falls on Tuesday when Monday and Tuesday are trading days. This does not mean a first purchase on Tuesday qualifies. The issuer's own announcement and any holiday or changed settlement arrangement control the actual case.

How much cash and yield would you receive?

For example, if an approved distribution is SAR 0.50 per share and you are entitled on 100 shares, the gross cash amount is SAR 50. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a current issuer payment. Any account-specific tax or other treatment needs separate review.

A trailing dividend yield divides the cash paid per share over a chosen past period by today's share price. If SAR 1.00 was paid over 12 months and the share costs SAR 20, the trailing yield is 5%. Use a consistent period and check whether the payments were ordinary or exceptional. A past 5% figure does not promise next year's payment.

Find the payment in the official calendar

  1. Search the Saudi Exchange dividend calendar by the company's name or trading symbol.
  2. Open the issuer announcement and read the eligibility condition, cash amount and approval status.
  3. Record the payment date and the distribution method. Recheck the announcement for later changes.
  4. Compare the expected cash with your investment-account statement after the payment date.

A calendar entry is not a recommendation to buy the share. It is a way to verify a corporate action and plan account checks.

What if the dividend has not arrived?

First verify that the payment date has passed and you met the exact eligibility terms. Then check the broker's investment account, registered bank details and any notices from the issuer or payment agent. Edaa says its dividend-distribution service can route cash through Tadawulaty and participating custodians; the method can differ by issuer.

Tadawulaty includes dividend-entitlement reports and expected-distribution notifications. If the entitlement appears but the cash does not, contact your broker or the named paying agent with the issuer, symbol, eligibility date, number of shares and account reference. Keep copies of the announcement and statements.

Why a high dividend yield needs investigation

The quoted yield rises when a share price falls, even if the company has not increased its cash payment. The price may fall because investors expect weaker earnings or a dividend cut. Buying just before a distribution also does not create a free gain: the market price can adjust when the share trades without that entitlement.

Review cash flow, debt, the dividend policy and recent issuer announcements alongside yield. A company may reduce or skip a future distribution, and your total return includes changes in the share price as well as cash received.

The payout ratio is another check: compare total ordinary dividends for a period with profit attributable to shareholders for the same period. A ratio above 100% can signal that the distribution exceeded that period's accounting profit, but does not alone prove an immediate cut; inspect cash flow, reserves and one-off items. Do not compare a quarterly dividend with a full-year profit figure.

Read a hypothetical issuer notice line by line

Suppose an issuer announces SAR 0.50 per share, names Sunday as the eligibility date and says entitled holders must be in Edaa's shareholder register by the end of the second trading day after it. It also says the payment date will be announced later. A holder should first check whether the decision is final or still subject to shareholder approval, then check the exact eligibility wording and only then calculate an expected cash amount.

For 100 entitled shares, SAR 0.50 per share means SAR 50 gross. Monday and Tuesday may be the first and second subsequent trading days in a normal week, but a market holiday changes that count. The register condition is not an invitation to buy for the first time on Tuesday. Keep the announcement and broker statement so you can resolve any later mismatch.

When the issuer later states a distribution date, check whether the cash is paid through a named agent, depository process or custodian. The route matters if a payment is missing. Do not infer a payment date from a previous distribution by the same company.

Cash amount, yield and payout ratio answer different questions

MeasureIllustrative calculationWhat it cannot tell you
Cash entitlement100 shares × SAR 0.50 = SAR 50Whether the share price will rise or fall
Trailing yieldSAR 1.00 paid over 12 months ÷ SAR 20 price = 5%What next year's dividend will be
Payout ratioSAR 100m ordinary dividends ÷ SAR 125m comparable profit = 80%Whether future cash flow can support the same payment

These invented figures illustrate different denominators. The yield uses the investor's market price; the payout ratio uses company-wide distributions and profit for the same period. Check extraordinary dividends and changes in the share count before comparing years.

Trace an expected payment without guessing

  1. Verify that the issuer has announced a final cash distribution and that its stated payment date has passed.
  2. Check the exact eligibility date, Edaa register condition and your holding at the relevant close.
  3. Search the broker's investment cash ledger as well as your linked bank account; the funds may appear in one before the other.
  4. Review Tadawulaty entitlement information and any notice from the issuer or paying agent.
  5. Send the broker or agent the issuer symbol, share count, date and account reference if the entitlement is confirmed but payment remains absent.

Keep a record of the response and escalate through the provider's stated complaint process if needed. A missing payment investigation starts with entitlement and routing evidence, not with a yield shown on a finance website.

Do not confuse cash dividends with bonus shares

A cash distribution credits money to an entitled holder through the stated payment route. A bonus-share issue changes the number of shares held under its own corporate-action terms; it is not a cash payment of the quoted per-share amount. Both can appear in company announcements, and the eligibility and processing steps must be read separately.

Before calculating expected cash, check that the announcement actually says 'cash dividend' and gives a cash amount per share. If it describes bonus shares, read the ratio, approval condition and effective date instead. After the event, reconcile either the cash ledger or share count with the broker and depository record. The distinction prevents a common mistake when scanning an issuer's news feed.

Saudi share dividends: FAQ

Is the eligibility date the same as the payment date?+

No. Eligibility establishes who qualifies under the issuer announcement; distribution is scheduled for a later date. Read both fields in the exchange calendar and the issuer notice.

Do I get a dividend simply by buying on the payment date?+

No. The issuer's eligibility condition determines entitlement. The payment date concerns delivery of cash to holders already entitled.

Why did my dividend yield rise while I received no extra cash?+

Yield is a ratio. It can rise because the share price fell, even when the dividend per share stayed the same. Review the payment period and issuer outlook before interpreting it.

Where can I check an unpaid dividend?+

Start with the issuer announcement, your broker's investment-account statement and Edaa's Tadawulaty entitlement information. Contact the broker or paying agent if an eligible payment remains missing after its stated distribution date.

Risk warning

A historical distribution is not guaranteed future income. Share prices may fall by more than a dividend received. Examples are educational, and eligibility depends on the current issuer announcement and account record.
